A NASCAR Diehard’s Take on Formula E

We started covering the world’s first major Electric racing series here at Seriously Fast about 2 1/2 years ago or so. The FiA’s Formula E series intrigued me as it had already been around for closing in on a decade and was continuing to grow. Now, I come from a NASCAR background—big, loud, brash, metal-on-metal, full-contact motorsports. Most NASCAR fans lose their ever-loving minds when you mention electric cars (most (85% or more) have less than a clue about them, but they go on as if they do), and to mention an electric race car? God help you, as heads will literally spin (picture Regan from the Exorcist).

Even though I began covering Formula E then, I had still never actually watched more than a few minutes of a race until this year. It was tough to find broadcasting in the US, and it was typically on when I was busy with family and whatnot. But this season, I made it a point to get in at least a few races.

As a NASCAR fan, I sure as hell didn’t have a high expectation of enjoying the racing. But I am happy to have been proven wrong. The first full race I ever watched was at Monaco in 2025, and it was fun to watch. The cars are incredibly nimble, especially on such a narrow track, and it’s perfection. Despite what I thought I would see, side-by-side battles are far more common here than F1.

OEMs? NASCAR has three: Ford, Chevrolet, and Toyota. In Formula E? Mahindra, Nissan, Porsche, Maserati, DS, Lola-Yamaha, and Jaguar are all current manufacturers in the series, which offers a vast diversity of powerplants and teams.

Now, of course, the noise is… well… not wonderful. And that’s it. That’s really the only negative I can think of. I wish the races were maybe a few laps longer, but that’s about it.
