If you weren’t out in the middle of nowhere in Manatee County, Florida, this past Friday night, you missed what might go down as the most chaotic chapter in the history of Cleetus McFarland’s Freedom 500. Under the humid Florida sky, the “seventh edition” of Cleetu’s signature Crown Vic showdown delivered exactly what we’ve come to expect: nasty wrecks, tire smoke, fender-rubbing, and a finish that had the sell-out crowd on their feet.
The Headliners and the Heartbreak
The grid was a “who’s who” of high-octane talent. Defending champion Travis Pastrana returned to protect his title, but the night was cruel to the home team. Cleetus McFarland saw his hopes evaporate early with mechanical gremlins after a wreck. It was a tough pill to swallow for a man who has been balancing his own growing NASCAR career with the demands of running Florida’s most famous “abandoned” racetrack. Let me tell you this, though: Cleet put on one hell of a show.
The Metal Mulisha Reigns Supreme
In a race defined by attrition and strategic “bump-and-runs,” Brian Deegan proved once again why he’s a legend across every discipline he touches. Deegan piloted his nitrous-fed, battle-scarred Crown Vic with surgical precision, navigating through the mid-race carnage that claimed nearly a third of the field.
The final laps were a masterclass in offensive driving. Deegan forced his way into the lead, then fended off a late-race charge from Pastrana in order to take the checkered flag. If the race wasn’t enough of an adrenaline dump, the event was immediately followed by an absolute war zone of a fireworks display that lit up the Manatee County countryside and assaulted the eardrums of everyone in attendance!
Why It Still Matters
For those of us who grew up on local short tracks, the Freedom 500 is a breath of fresh air. It’s not just about the YouTubers; it’s about the spirit of racing—taking a $2000 car, welding in a cage, and everyone having a great time racing to the checkers! One of the things that I noticed was that everyone… Fans, Track workers, drivers, and guests had one hell of a good time. NASCAR, take notice! This was the most fun that I’ve had at a racetrack in a long, long time! Great Job, Cleet!!
