All Ford Front Row Boots Chevrolet’s Dominance

Joey Logano of Team Penske and Michael McDowell of Front Row Motorsports swept the front row for the Daytona 500 with their pair of Ford Mustang Dark Horses. That means, for the first time since 2012, a Chevrolet will not sit on the pole for the Great American Race. Carl Edwards, also in a Ford, was the last driver who did not race a Chevrolet to win the Pole Award for the Daytona 500.

“This is all about the team,” said Logano, who scored the 29th pole of his career. “I’d like to take credit, but I can’t today. The guys have done such an amazing job working on these cars. Speedway qualifying is 100 percent the car. Logano’s Pole Award is the first time that Team Penske has ever won in the Great American Race.

Joey Logano had never won a Pole Award for the 500, but with a time of 49.465 seconds, he managed to squeeze out McDowell by 0.261 seconds and keep McDowell from his first-ever Pole. Ford Performance’s new Dark Horse Made up 4 of the top 10 in qualifying speed for the 500, with the remainder being Chevrolets. Chevrolet’s top qualifier was in P. 3 with Kyle Larson. Toyota, on the other hand, was nowhere to be seen. Erik Jones led the Toyota camp in their efforts in 22nd with his No. 43 Camry.

The remainder of the field from 3rd back will be determined later Thursday night with the Blue Green Vacation Duels, the event’s 150-mile qualifying races. Duel 1 will determine the inside lane behind Logano, and Duel 2 will determine the outside lane behind McDowell. You can catch the Duels on FS1 tonight, with Duel 1 starting at 7 p.m. ET.
