Shanghai will join the 2024 grid for the Formula E series with double-header races on May 25th and 26th. Shanghai has a population of 26.32 million people making it the most populated city in the country. This will be the sport’s first time returning to China since 2019, pre-Covid.

Shanghai joins Hyderabad, India and Portland, USA in the sport’s 10th season. Hyderabad is the 4th highest populated city in India with a population of 10.8 million residents while lowly old Portland weighs in with a minuscule little 641,162 people per the last US census in 2021. Hyderabad will host its standalone race as the 3rd city and 4th race on Feb 10, 2024. Portland will host the series later in the season on June 29, 2024, as the 14th event of the season.

There have previously been 7 races in China including the very first Formula E race in 2014. Last season, the 31,000 capacity crowd sold out in India. In 2023, the Frenchman, Jean-Éric VERGNE won the Hyderabad race while New Zealander, Nick CASSIDY won the race at Portland. Vergne currently sits as the defending race winner in China.
