Despite a new body for both Ford and Toyota, neither manufacturer had won outside of exhibition races so far in 2024. Toyota has performed slightly better than Ford early this season in the Cup Series in terms of winning those exhibition races, but for the points races, not so much. That changed at this weekend’s Shriners Children’s 500 at Phoenix Raceway.
Three drivers dominated the early race: Denny Hamlin, who started on Pole; Ty Gibbs, who began in P. 2; and Tyler Reddick, who started 6th. Gibbs would lead 57 laps, both Hamlin and Reddick led 68 laps each, Martin Truex Jr. would lead 55 laps near the middle of the race, and eventual race winner Christopher Bell would go on to lead 50 for a combined 298 of the 312 laps.
In addition to the race win and laps led, Tyler Reddick and Christopher Bell’s Toyota Camrys won both Stages, with all Toyota drivers accounting for 68 of the 110 total Stage Points earned.
The Xfinity Call811.com Every Dig. Every Time 200 was no different. Toyotas led 92 of the 205 laps, 31 more than the Fords and 40 more than the Chevrolets. Race winner Chandler Smith led 88 of those laps, with teammate John Hunter Nemechek leading 4 more. Smith also won Stage 1 for a combined 17 Stage Points.
William Sawalich would also win the General Tire 150 on Friday in his Joe Gibbs Racing No. 18 Camry for a Toyota clean sweep of the weekend.
