After 239 career F1 starts, Nico Hulkenberg scored his first podium finish. It was a moment that all racing fans cheered. I’m glad an unrated driver finally gets his flowers. He’s been working miracles at Stake this season and it came full circle at Silverstone. The entire paddock helped in the celebration. Mercedes and Aston Martin rushed champagne to the stage, a kind gesture.
Oscar Piastri needs public relations work after the British Grand Prix. In multiple instances this weekend, he came off negatively.
He asked the team to switch Lando Norris and himself after the time penalty was served. McLaren rightly denied this request. He intentionally braked hard under the safety car, causing a near collision with Max Verstappen. F1 gave a justified harsh penalty. He didn’t spray Hulkenberg with champagne.
His biggest blunder was asking Hulkenberg an unsanctioned question in the post-race interview. Whether it was a joke or not, it came off poorly.
Alex Palou is human after all. The best driver in IndyCar made two uncharacteristic mistakes costing him the win. His teammate, Scott Dixon, again proves his inhuman ability to save fuel. Dixon’s win marks his 21st consecutive season with a win. Overall, it was a great day for Ganassi.
NASCAR made the correct decision to throw the caution after the white flag. Emergency crews were sent to Cody Ware quickly. NASCAR avoided a chaotic overtime that might have taken place in the rain. It was a tough decision, but the correct one.
Shane van Gisbergen is arguably the best road racer in NASCAR’s history. His overall ability is questionable, but nobody can deny three wins in 33 starts. I chose him to lead NASCAR in wins, and he’s on track to do so.
Technology and safety have come a long way. The accidents involving Indy NXT’s Cody Ware and Isaac Hadjar proved how safe racing is today.
