Spins, Shovels & Flips, Brad Doty Classic Delivers a Wild Night

The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars visited Attica Raceway Park in Ohio on Tuesday night for the thirty-sixth running of the Ohio Logistics Brad Doty Classic presented by DAC Vitamins and Minerals. The race, which began in 1989, pays tribute to Brad Doty, a legendary sprint car driver whose career was cut short in an accident at the Kings Royal in Eldora in 1988 that left him paralyzed from the chest down. It was a wild evening that included multiple spins from the lead, wild flips, and a medical delay for an incident involving Kalib Henry on the final lap of the Last Chance Showdown (Read More). At one point, track officials even had to dig a wing ram out of the racetrack with a shovel. Yeah, that happened too.

Kyle Larson picked up the win in his heat race and then won the dash, allowing him to start from the pole. He and Buddy Kofoid battled early, with Larson running his traditional high line. Sheldon Haudenschild, who started 3rd, was able to get around Larson around lap 12, though the two would battle intermittently until a caution on lap 25 for Zeth Sabo. Carson Macedo completed an impressive three-wide pass on the restart to pass Larson and Logan Schuchart for 3rd place just before a red flag for Bill Balog and Cap Henry flipping during a crash on lap 27. That crash resulted in one of Balog’s wing rams being buried into the ground deep enough that a shovel and several minutes were required to extract it.

The closing laps were even wilder thanks to a tricky turn four that gave drivers trouble all evening. On lap 31, Kofoid spun from the lead while battling Haudenschild, and then five laps later, Haudenschild spun in the same spot, handing the lead to Carson Macedo. Macedo held off a charge from Kofoid on the ensuing restart before pulling away to win his sixth WOO event of the year. Points leader David Gravel finished 6th and now sits 172 points ahead of Buddy Kofoid.

Next up for the Greatest Show on Dirt is the 42nd running of the Kings Royal at Eldora on July 18th and 19th. As always, if you can’t make it in person, you can catch every lap on DirtVision.
