The high rollers of the Kubota High Limit Racing series were back in action this weekend for the first time since July 22nd at Lernerville. No Sunshine and no Ruetzel, but Brad Sweet was back, Corey Day had a new ride, and Spencer Bayston was missing a number. Don’t worry, that’s legal. Let’s dig in.
The big news last week was that Spencer Bayston was out of the Jason Meyers Racing 14 car after the team struggled for much of the season. With the departure, the team consolidated from two cars into one, with Corey Day moving from the 24 to the 14. Bayston found himself a ride piloting the “w” car for Kevin Kozlowski during this west coast swing, and as fate would have it, Bayston and Day found themselves dueling it out for victory at Tulare. Bayston led the race early, with Day making his way into the fray in the second half. The two raced hard with Day ultimately prevailing. Bayston would finish 2nd, his best showing of the season.
On Saturday night, the series moved 250 miles north to Placerville Speedway. The story of the night was two drivers searching for their first victory in the Kubota High Limit Racing series. Kaleb Montgomery, a California native, led the race from the pole until Justin Sanders, who is currently filling in for the injured Aaron Reutzel, challenged for the lead. Montgomery threw everything he could at Sanders as the two went to battle several times during the 30-lap feature. Ultimately the 87 of Sanders claimed the victory, adding himself to the Kubota High Limit Racing list of victors.
New points contenders
Now that the medical waivers have officially expired, this weekend was the first time we actually saw real movement in the points standings resulting from the injuries to Tyler Courtney and Aaron Reutzel at Eldora. Brad Sweet returned with a pair of 4th place finishes to secure his points lead, due in part to both Rico Abreau (2nd) and Brent Marks (3rd) having rough weekends. They now sit 71 and 120 points behind Sweet in the season standings. Outside of Abreau, who we know can get hot quickly, I just don’t know that anyone (who isn’t injured) has anything for Sweet as long as he can stay healthy down the home stretch.
Bayston strong in new ride
The big High Limit news this week was Spencer Bayston being released from Jason Meyers Racing after Eldora. He was able to pick up a ride with the Kevin Kozlowski-owned “w” car for the west coast swing, allowing him to not miss any races on the High Limit schedule for at least a week. Even better is that this pairs him with Paul Silva at crew chief. Bayston responded by scoring a pair of top-five finishes, with a season-best 2nd at Thunderbowl in his first two races in the car. We all know Bayston is a capable driver and has shown flashes this season in the 14. He ran second for nearly the first half of the Iron Man at Pevely before falling off the second half of the event, and he had a solid finish at Knoxville last week. Maybe these recent showings will help him land something to finish out 2025 in the High Limit series.
