In a sport where drivers are often groomed from childhood for a single purpose, Dr. Patrick Staropoli breaks the mold. After a decade away from the track to pursue one of the most demanding careers imaginable, the 35-year-old Harvard graduate and board-certified retina surgeon returned to the ARCA and NASCAR garage in 2025—and he didn’t miss a beat.
It’s a storyline that sounds like a Hollywood script: a driver trades his helmet for scrubs, becomes a specialized eye surgeon, and then, with his medical career established, puts the helmet back on to chase his original dream.
For Staropoli, 2025 was the year that script became reality.
A Decade of Detours
Fans with long memories might recall Staropoli as the winner of the 2013 “PEAK Stock Car Dream Challenge,” which earned him a shot in the K&N Pro Series (now ARCA West), where he won in 2014. But as racing opportunities dried up, Staropoli pivoted, focusing on the other passion he had been pursuing simultaneously: medicine.
He didn’t just become a doctor. He graduated with honors from Harvard University and completed his ophthalmology residency and vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the #1-ranked eye hospital in the nation. He is now a practicing retina surgeon in Houston, Texas, performing complex procedures to save and restore patients’ vision.
Most drivers spend their 20s trying to find a full-time ride. Staropoli spent his learning to repair retinal detachments.
The 2025 Return
This season, Dr. Staropoli returned to the sport with a multi-series plan. He kicked off his comeback in the ARCA Menards Series, signing a multi-race deal with powerhouse Venturini Motorsports. He quickly proved he had no rust, securing a top-10 finish in his first race back at Phoenix Raceway.
But his comeback didn’t stop there. Staropoli also announced a partial schedule in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series with Cook Racing Technologies and, most notably, made his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut at Martinsville, driving for Sam Hunt Racing.
”Competing at the upper levels of stock car racing has always been a dream of mine,” Staropoli said earlier this year. “I’m so honored to be able to combine my passion for medicine and motorsports.”
His return was fittingly sponsored by Syfovre, an injection used to treat geographic atrophy, a condition related to his field of retina surgery. It’s the ultimate combination of his two worlds—his profession funding his passion.
Staropoli’s story is a powerful testament to perseverance. He is living proof that it’s never too late to chase a dream, even if you have to take a 10-year detour to become one of the nation’s top eye surgeons first. The doctor is in, and he’s Seriously Fast.
