Into the Unknown: The Concrete Jungle Awaits

Andy DeLay, Staff Writer

History is officially being made in St Petersburg as NASCARs “heavy metal” machines prepare for their first-ever run on a street circuit. While the IndyCar guys have been running here since 2003, the Truck Series drivers are walking into this weekend with a blank sheet of paper.

I caught up with Kaden Honeycutt and Taylor Gray near the TRICON Garage transporters this morning. Both were remarkably candid about the “wildcard” nature of this inaugural event.

”Nobody has any notes,” Honeycutt told me, squinting at the 1.8-mile layout. “We’re all starting from zero. It’s a total wildcard.”

Gray echoed that sentiment but took it a step further when looking at the actual track width—or lack thereof. “It’s tight. Really narrow,” he noted. “Honestly, with these trucks and the way we race? I expect it to be a demo derby out there.”

The Weather Factor: Rain or Shine, We Race

To add a layer of drama that only the Florida weather can provide, there is significant rain in the forecast for Saturday. The teams aren’t blinking, though. They’ve spent the morning prepping the rain tires and ensuring the wipers are functional.

Qualifying is scheduled for later today, and the race—the OnlyBulls Green Flag 150—takes the green at 12:00 PM ET tomorrow on FOX. Whether it’s a “clean” street race or the “demo derby” our drivers expect, you won’t want to miss a second of it.
