Zach Mecca Veteran NASCAR Spotter

Q. Can you give us your name, age, and where you’re from?

A. My Name is Zach Mecca, I’m 27 from Rotterdam, New York.

Q. How did you become a fan of motorsports?

A. I became a fan of motorsports when I was a little kid. I remember watching Jeff Gordon running a lot of races. My dad was a huge Jeff Gordon fan. We went to our 1st race when I was a young teenager. I first went to the 2013 Bank of America 400 down in Charlotte, but I remember watching almost every Sunday. I started my motorsports career shortly after I turned 18.

Q. How did you get into spotting?

A. You’re not the first person to ask me that and it’s a funny story. Back in 2018, I was playing NASCAR Heat with a buddy of mine. We got into a lobby with somebody named Stephen Leicht. He was a chill guy and we got along with him really well. We connected with each other afterwards and we had a lot in common. It turns out that Stephen, who I believe was driving with JD Motorsports at the time, had been switching over to MBM. My buddy and I went down to Charlotte to start bowling. We got hooked up with Stephen and he liked us. He said MBM and Carl always could use help and asked if I wanted to help. It ventured off and started as an Xbox game and just meeting the right person at the right time. I’m still really close with Stephen to this day. I’ll always be grateful for that.

Q. Any good stories from spotting?

A. Timmy Hill pulled a really good trick on me. I spotted my first-ever cup race with Timmy in Indianapolis, I believe it was 2021. We were still on the old Gen 6 chassis before they switched over to the next Gen. There’s a red flag for caution with the curbing that got run over. I can’t remember if it was Byron or Logano who ripped it up. Under caution, they apparently planned a trick to prank me. Timmy was acting like he couldn’t hear me, even under caution or the red flag. So he kept asking if anybody could hear. I was in turn one at the time. It went on for about 15 minutes until Chad Fincham texted me and said you know he could hear me and it was a prank. After the race, we all got together. To this day, whenever we see each other, we make the joke about the whole turn-one-spotter prank.

A. Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know?

Q. Always try to stay positive, never give up on yourself. I always try to stay with that mentality. Don’t quit even when times seem rough, just stick with it. God has a plan for everybody and one day that dream will come true.
