Gragson and Hemric Capitalize on Second Chances

It’s not often that people get second chances. In the uppermost echelon of sports, it’s even less common. Noah Gragson and Daniel Hemric were two drivers who got a second chance at the big time in 2024.

Over the last two weeks at Dover and Talladega, both drivers scored back-to-back top-10 finishes. Gragson finished P.3 at Dega and P.6 at Dover, while Hemric netted two 9th-place finishes in a row.

Noah Gragson got his second chance after stepping down from Legacy Motor Club in 2023 following a social media issue. We were the first to confirm that Stewart-Haas Racing picked him up in the off-season to replace retiring Aric Almirola in their No. 10 Mustang entry.

Daniel Hemric raced in Cup for Richard Childress Racing in 2019 before being dropped and sent back to Xfinity. There, he bounced around until being picked up by Gibbs, where he won the title in 2021. He then moved full-time to Kaulig Racing in 2022. In 2024, he got his second chance with Kaulig to go full-time in the Cup Series in their No. 31 Camaro.

2024 has not been as kind to Daniel as it has been to Noah, but the pair both left Talladega and Dover with back-to-back top-10 finishes. Hemric’s finishes increased his career total of two top-10s from 3 to 5; those 9th-place finishes are a bright spot as Hemric has failed to finish better than 20th since Vegas.

On the other hand, Gragson has arguably been the best car at Stewart-Haas Racing in 2024. Despite his 35-point penalty from earlier in the season, Gragson moved up 6 positions in the standings following Dover. He leaves Dover with 1 top-5 and 4 top-10s, with his two 34th-place finishes at Bristol and COTA absolutely wreaking havoc on his standing.

Both drivers’ sophomore seasons have seen massive improvements over their rookie seasons in the first 11 races. They both are showing that sometimes, second chances can pay off. Hemric’s average over the first 11 races went from 24.27 in 2019 to 22 in 2024, and Gragson’s from 27.54 in 2023 to 17.27 in 2024.
