Formula One’s Drag Reduction System, better known as simply DRS, is designed to improve overtaking, which it does. But more overtaking doesn’t always equal better racing.
What people want to see in a race is battles; two drivers going at it blow for blow. DRS is capable of producing battles, but it feels few and far between. What DRS often produces are passes; a driver taking a position without much fight. DRS produces an abundance of passes while true battles are hard to come by.
I feel that this issue is caused by the DRS Zones; keeping DRS limited to a specific spot on track and only being available to drivers who are only 1 second behind the driver in front of them. I’d propose F1 make DRS available at all times (except in the wet), but put an allotted amount of time that it’s able to be used. For example, in INDYCAR, drivers are allotted 200 Seconds of Push to Pass, the goal of which is the same as DRS, though that goal is reached in a different way.
So, in essence, make DRS always available, but limit drivers to 150-200 Seconds of DRS that drivers have to use sparingly and strategically throughout the race, as well as a maximum usage period of ~20 Seconds. This would add an interesting wrinkle to the strategy for fans to follow, as well as potentially improve the quality of racing all around.
