Opinion- NASCAR Needs to take a Big Swing with its All-Star Race

The NASCAR All-Star weekend is this weekend at North Wilkesboro Speedway. While the track is nostalgic, it’s time for a change. The 2024 race is only remembered for the fight between Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Kyle Busch. I bet you don’t recall that Joey Logano led 199 of 200 laps, do you? NASCAR needs to take a big swing for the future of the All-Star race for memorable moments.

The all-star weekend is meant to showcase your sport. NASCAR has a prime opportunity to maximize its showcase with one move: move the All-Star race to Indianapolis in May.

A collaboration between the two series would benefit both. Rodger Penske currently owns both the IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Fitting the race in wouldn’t be difficult since Penske is also a top NASCAR team.

The gimmicks would be eliminated to fit the race into the schedules of both series. There would be no All-Star Open, no qualifying, just the race around the world-famous speedway. Cars would start in reverse order of point standings, and the best man would win.

A racing fan’s dream would be a monumental weekend of IndyCar practice and qualifying for its grandest race, mixed with NASCAR’s showcase.
