Alex Palou has won four of five races in IndyCar this season. His other finish is second place at Long Beach. He has an average finish of 1.2 for the season—that is not a typo. His fourth championship in five seasons looks imminent. That would tie him for second all-time in championships. At only 28 years old, he is poised to catch Scott Dixon for the all-time championship record.
The most wins in an IndyCar season is 10. AJ Foyt in 1964 and Al Unser in 1970 are tied. Foyt did it in a 13-race season, while Unser did it in an 18-race season. It’s hard to say if Palou will reach this record. Six of the remaining 13 races are on ovals, which he has never won. Statistically, he runs well at ovals, just hasn’t gotten a win yet.
He came into the Indy GP with the largest points margin through four races in IndyCar history. He leaves today with an even larger gap. His season is dominant enough that nobody is talking about Christian Lundgaard, who has three podiums this season.
Speaking of podiums, Palou has finished on the step in 41% of the races he’s participated in. He is IndyCar’s most dominant driver and one we need to appreciate. With each passing week, we witness history.
