Esteban Ocon and Alpine announced today that the 27-year-old Frenchman will not be with the team in 2025. This comes after his shunt with teammate Pierre Gasly at Monaco, a move that saw Ocon receive a five-place grid penalty for Canada. For Alpine, this is the worst-case scenario. They lost both Oscar Piastri and Fernando Alonso in a botched contract situation, now they lose Ocon.
For Ocon, this could be his last season in Formula 1. He has a reputation for not being a team player, something all F1 teams look down on. His options for seats are also dwindling as drivers announce plans for 2025. Looking at his options for 2025, Haas seems to be the only obtainable seat. That’s only if Kevin Magnussen isn’t re-signed, Oliver Bearman is an overwhelming favorite for one of the seats.
For Alpine, two options emerge. Jack Doohan and Mick Schumacher are both in Alpine’s system and ready to make the move to F1. Schumacher would return to the grid after a lackluster showing at Haas, while Doohan is looking to move from reserve driver to full-time. Each would benefit Alpine with regulation changes coming in 2026. They must find out if their young drivers have what it takes to move the team forward with a technical reset near. In my opinion, Doohan will get the seat in 2025.
